Strategic actions

1. Strengthening the Permanent Secretariat of the OTCA

Consolidation of OTCA as a regional technical support entity specialized in the conservation, restoration and sustainable use of the components of biological diversity of the Amazon Basin/Region. The component aims to strengthen the OTCA technical team to improve expert advice to Member States in the formulation, management of regional financing and implementation of regional projects, promoting a greater balance between Amazonian countries.

2. Updating National Strategies and Action Plans on Biological Diversity

Support for the updating of the National Strategies and Action Plans for Biological Diversity (EPANDB) of the Member States in relation to the objectives of the management instruments of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), identifying common regional aspects to be strengthened. Regional dialogues and exchanges on effective and gender-based approaches and implementation measures will also be promoting dialogues and exchanges in order to contribute to achieving the cbd's objectives in the national contexts of the Member States.

Strengthening the strategic planning and regional technical capacity of the Permanent Secretariat of the OTCA to support Member States in the management of biological diversity.

Measures Taken

Strategic Action No. 1:

Establishment of spaces for political dialogue and the exchange of experiences and information among ACTO Member Countries, as well as the promotion of participation in regional and international forums, including:

Regional exchange on the implementation of the new Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and its 23 targets in ACTO member countries.

Regional exchange on successful experiences in the management of biodiversity and ecosystem services in the Amazon region.

Regional dialogue with the private sector on successful cases of sustainable use of Amazonian biodiversity. Regional dialogue to disseminate the results of the report of the Scientific Panel for the Amazon.

Participation of the Permanent Secretariat of OTCA (SP/OTCA) in the Amazon Dialogues and in the Summit of Presidents of ACTO Member Countries in the city of Bethlehem in 2023.

SP/ACTO participation in the negotiations of the CBD COP 15 in 2021 and 2022, held in the cities of Kunming and Montreal.

SP/ACTO participation in the Stakeholder day within the framework of the IPBES-9 Conference held in Bonn in 2023. SP/ACTO participation in the Global Bioeconomy Forum held in Belém (Brazil) in 2021.

SP/ACTO participation in the IUCN World Conservation Congress held in Marseille in 2021 to present the new biodiversity conservation approach for the Amazon region.

Results/Outputs generated

Repositioning of ACTO as an organization that leads and conducts regional and international dialogue, presenting the needs and interests of countries that share one of the most biologically diverse regions in the world.
